Pimcore

Pimcore is a Salzburg-based vendor of an open-core platform that combines PIM, MDM, DAM, CMS and commerce capabilities. It suits organisations with development capacity that want a highly customisable, self-hostable data platform, with commercial editions for enterprise support and managed cloud.

Overview

Pimcore offers a single platform that spans product information management, master data management, digital asset management, content management and digital commerce. The software was first released in 2010 by the agency New Media Solutions, and Pimcore GmbH was founded in Salzburg in 2013. The privately held company raised a USD 3.5 million Series A led by Auctus Capital in 2018 and a USD 12 million Series B led by Nordwind Growth in 2022. On 27 August 2026 Nordwind Growth agreed to sell its majority stake to Tenzing, a London-based investor in European B2B software, subject to antitrust approvals.

The licensing model changed significantly in 2025. With version 12, Pimcore moved its Community Edition from an open-source licence to the proprietary Pimcore Open Core License (POCL), while commercial Professional, Enterprise and Enterprise PaaS editions run under the Pimcore Enterprise License. Part of the developer community responded with a fork called OpenDXP. Version 12 also made Pimcore Studio, a React and TypeScript administration interface, the default user interface in place of the legacy ExtJS UI.

Fit is strongest for organisations with in-house or partner development capacity that want to model complex data freely and host the platform on their own infrastructure or private cloud. The integrated DAM and CMS reduce the number of systems needed for product content and web experiences. Buyers should account for implementation effort, since the flexibility of the framework typically requires more custom development than packaged SaaS PIM tools, and should review the licence terms of each edition carefully after the 2025 changes.

Key capabilities

  • Flexible data modelling framework
  • Multi-domain master data management
  • Integrated digital asset management
  • Content management and commerce
  • Self-hosted or managed cloud deployment
  • Pimcore Studio administration interface

Strengths and considerations

Strengths

  • One platform covers PIM, MDM, DAM and CMS, which can reduce the number of separate systems in the product content stack.
  • Deployment choice across on-premise, private cloud and managed PaaS suits organisations with strict hosting or data residency requirements.
  • The development framework allows highly specific data models and workflows for complex B2B catalogues.

Check before buying

  • The 2025 move of version 12 to the proprietary POCL licence changes the cost and usage assumptions of earlier open-source adoption.
  • Implementations typically require significant development effort, so partner quality strongly influences outcomes.
  • The breadth of the platform demands clear governance to prevent over-customisation and upgrade complexity.
  • The pending change of majority owner to Tenzing in 2026 means buyers should confirm roadmap, licensing and pricing commitments in contracts.

Best for

Fit summaryManufacturers, distributors and retailers with development capacity that need a customisable, self-hostable platform covering PIM, MDM and DAM.

Regulatory and compliance data

EU timeline →

Pimcore positions its PIM, MDM and DAM as the data foundation for Digital Product Passports, with APIs publishing passport data to external hosting platforms. A partner extension, Digital Product Passport by Narravero, is sold on the Pimcore Store for EUR 5,000 per year plus a separate Narravero platform licence; it requires a commercial Pimcore edition and lists Pimcore 11 compatibility. No native DPP or PPWR packaging module was documented, so passport data structures are typically built during implementation and version compatibility should be confirmed.

Frequently asked questions about Pimcore

Is Pimcore still open source?

Not fully. In 2025 Pimcore released version 12 under the proprietary Pimcore Open Core License (POCL), replacing its previous open-source licence. The free Community Edition remains available under POCL, while Professional, Enterprise and PaaS editions are commercial. A community fork named OpenDXP emerged in response to the change.

Does Pimcore include DAM?

Yes. Pimcore includes digital asset management as part of its platform, alongside PIM, MDM, content management and commerce capabilities. This allows product data and related assets to be managed in one system, which is useful for organisations wanting fewer integrations between PIM and DAM.

Where is Pimcore based?

Pimcore GmbH is headquartered in Salzburg, Austria, and was founded in 2013, although the software was first released in 2010. The privately held company works with implementation partners across Europe, North America and Southeast Asia and has been backed by Auctus Capital and Nordwind Growth. In August 2026 Nordwind Growth agreed to sell its majority stake to Tenzing, pending antitrust approval.
