How to evaluate PIM & PXM vendors
5 criteria- Data model flexibility. Test families, variants, bundles and multi-language attributes with your hardest product category. Weak modelling shows up within the first scripted demo.
- Syndication and channels. Check native connectors to your retailers, marketplaces and data pools such as GDSN, plus how the suite reports feed errors back to editors.
- Supplier onboarding. Evaluate supplier portals, import mapping and AI-assisted classification. Supplier data is often 60 to 80% of the enrichment workload in retail (estimate).
- Regulatory data. Ask how the suite stores GPSR safety information, packaging data and DPP attributes, and whether it publishes them to a passport or label.
- Total cost of ownership. Implementation often costs one to three times the first-year licence (estimate). Include partner rates, integration and internal stewardship roles in the comparison.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PIM and PXM?
PIM manages product attributes, relationships and enrichment workflows. PXM extends PIM with syndication to channels, content quality analytics, digital assets and sometimes personalisation. Vendors use the PXM label differently, so compare capabilities and connectors directly.
Is a PIM required for the Digital Product Passport?
A PIM is a common publishing layer for DPP data because it already holds identifiers and channel content. Technical and material data usually originates in PLM or ERP. The passport itself is often hosted by a specialist DPP service provider.
