PLM software vendors for Europe and global markets
Product lifecycle management systems hold the specification, bill of materials and change history of every product. Under ESPR and PPWR, they also become the starting point for regulatory product data.

How to evaluate PLM vendors
5 criteria- Industry fit. Discrete manufacturing PLM centres on CAD, EBOM and change control. Fashion, retail and food PLM centres on specifications, tech packs, formulations and supplier collaboration. Shortlist within the right family first.
- Materials and compliance data. Check substance compliance (REACH, RoHS, PFAS), packaging component data and how the system stores material composition per BOM line. This data feeds Digital Product Passports and PPWR declarations.
- Deployment and upgrade model. SaaS PLM reduces upgrade effort but limits deep customisation. On-premise and private cloud PLM suit heavy CAD integration and strict IT policies. Model a five-year cost for each option.
- Integration with ERP, PIM and DPP services. PLM must hand released product data to ERP and PIM, and increasingly to a DPP service provider. Ask for documented connectors and a reference that runs the full chain.
- Supplier collaboration. Retail and CPG PLM depends on supplier portals for specifications, test results and certificates. Evaluate supplier onboarding effort and licence cost per supplier user.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PLM and PIM?
PLM manages a product from concept to release: requirements, design, BOM, specifications and change control. PIM manages the commercial product record after release: marketing content, attributes per channel and syndication. Most manufacturers need both, with PLM as the source of technical truth.
Which PLM systems support the Digital Product Passport?
Several PLM vendors document sustainability and materials modules that supply DPP data, and some partner with specialist DPP providers. Check each profile's regulatory data section and ask vendors for a live demo of a passport built from PLM data.
How long does a PLM implementation take?
A focused SaaS PLM rollout for one division typically takes 4 to 9 months. Enterprise programmes with CAD integration, migration and several sites often run 12 to 24 months in phases. These ranges are estimates and depend on scope and data quality.
