Siemens Opcenter RD&L

Siemens Opcenter Research, Development and Laboratory (RD&L) is the formulated-products PLM component of the Siemens Opcenter manufacturing operations portfolio, offered by Siemens Digital Industries Software, the Plano-based Siemens AG business formed in 2007. The product was formerly sold as SIMATIC IT R&D Suite and is still marketed as Opcenter RD&L, with release 2404 in 2024. It addresses process manufacturers whose products are defined by recipes and specifications, including food and beverage, consumer goods, cosmetics and chemicals companies.

The suite has three main parts. Opcenter Formulation lets developers build formulas linked to specifications, reuse previous recipes, simulate formula behaviour as a digital twin before physical trials, compare alternatives and apply AI optimisation to find better variants. Opcenter Specification acts as a central repository for raw materials, mixes and packaging materials, and generates compliant labels covering ingredients, nutrition, allergens and claims from bills of materials. Opcenter Laboratory adds a full laboratory information management system for quality testing, and since August 2026 Siemens also offers it as Opcenter X Laboratory, a SaaS edition. Siemens cites Gruppo Campari as a specification customer.

Regulatory checks run during formulation: changes are automatically tested against regulatory limits in target markets. This addresses food law, cosmetics and chemical substance rules at the recipe level. Public material does not describe PPWR declarations, packaging recyclability scoring or Digital Product Passport output, although packaging material specifications are held in the repository. Organisations with PPWR obligations should therefore test whether packaging attributes and supplier declarations can be captured and reported. As part of a larger Siemens estate, RD&L fits manufacturers already running Siemens MES or Teamcenter.
